Nervous System Regulation from a physiotherapist’s view

Nervous system regulation techniques is an umbrella term for any support to help regulate your system. This could be breathwork, music/sound, meditation, movement, tapping, acupuncuture, pressure, the list goes on!

As a physio this comes up in sessions as pain can of course increase anxiety and fear. It can also drive pain (jaw pain from clenching, tension headaches, pain that comes with increase stress (neck/low back), stomach issues).

Learning and being exposed to various regulation techniques is something I prioritize.

Here are some of my favorites

  1. Breathwork: 2 quick inhales, 1 long exhale. 10 minutes

  2. Sound: playing music at a low level that is calming or attending a soundbath

  3. Mediation: visual, body scans

  4. Movement: restorative yoga or walking in nature

  5. Tapping: emotional focused tapping

  6. Pressure/ Touch - massage, cranio-sacral, weighted blanket
